Music, poetry, fun as Malawi celebrates Mother’s Day
As Malawians celebrate Mother’s Day today, various artists have lined activities to join mothers in commemorating their special day.
The day is usually marked my merry-making, presenting gifts to mothers and mother figures. In Malawi, popular gift is a Mother’s Day chitenje.
However, this year, artists are taking a leading role in ensuring that mothers are celebrated.
In Lilongwe, By Grace Kitchens and Accessories have organised a free show at Sheaffer ICA Marquee where various artists are set to entertain patrons.
In an interview, musician Kondwani Chirwa assured patrons of a great show.
“We are set to celebrate mothers with our performances. We want mothers to feel loved and appreciated,” he said.

Musician Carol Kadzuwa said she is set to entertain mothers and urged her fans to patronise the show in large numbers.
Meanwhile, there will be a poetry event at Nalikule Teacher
Training College in Lilongwe to celebrate mothers organised by Poetry Association of Malawi, Central Region Chapter.
Poets such as Raphael Sitima, Hudson Chamasowa, Gift Mulimbika and Treazer Zabuloni will perform at the event.
And in Blantyre, another Mother’s Day concert will take place at Robins Park.
In Zomba, one of the prominent schools Sir Harry Johnston International will host a Mother’s Day special fun fair.
One of the event coordinators Bester Kayaye said the event will go beyond celebration and promote family unit and community engagement.
“The event is about celebrating mothers as the backbone of our family and communities. But it is also about creating space for families to connect, enjoy quality time together and for local businesses to showcase their products and services,” he said.
Meanwhile, poet CJ Guwa is celebrating the day with a special poem. The Lilongwe-based poet has dropped a poem titled Odala Anakubala.
Real name Clifford Guwa, CJ Guwa, who was named Best Poet of the Year at the Young Achievers Africa Awards 2025 at a ceremony held in
Rwanda, said mothers deserve everything good.
“I have released the poem because mothers play a vital role in our lives. They are the ones who raised us with love and care. They carried us to the hospital when we were sick and guided us until we could stand on our own,” he said.
Random interviews with mothers on the streets of Blantyre indicate that expect to receive gifts and celebrated by their children.
Said Ellen Kachimanga: “As a mother and wife, I expect to be celebrated by my children and husband. My whole life changed the day I became a mother and this day is very important. It is not easy being a mother.”
Another mother, Chikondi Eneya said motherhood taught her patience and resilience.
“Therefore, because of that, even if I don’t get a Mother’s Day present, I am fine with just an appreciation message,” she said.
